ICUMSA & Global Sugar Classification

The International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA) is a globally recognized organization that standardizes analytical methods for sugar quality assessment across more than 20 countries.

It brings together national committees and industry experts to ensure consistency, accuracy, and transparency in sugar testing and classification.

ICUMSA methods are officially recognized by major global authorities including Codex Alimentarius Commission, OIML, the European Union, and the US Food Chemicals Codex.

ICUMSA ratings provide a universal and reliable way to describe sugar quality worldwide.
ICUMSA 45

Known as premium refined white sugar, ICUMSA 45 is the highest quality sugar available in the global market. It has a sparkling white appearance, high purity, and is widely used for direct human consumption and food processing.

ICUMSA 100

A lower-grade refined sugar with a light white color, ICUMSA 100 is produced through crystallization without heavy chemical refining. It is cost-effective and safe for consumption.

ICUMSA 150

Also known as crystal sugar, ICUMSA 150 is widely used in large-scale food production and beverages. It is less refined and serves as a cost-effective alternative to ICUMSA 45.

ICUMSA 600–1200

This raw brown sugar is produced after the first crystallization of sugarcane. It contains natural molasses and is primarily used for further refining processes.

VHP Sugar

Very High Polarity (VHP) sugar contains over 99.4% sucrose. It is widely exported for refining due to its high purity and lower contamination levels compared to traditional raw sugars.

Icing Sugar

Also known as powdered sugar, it is finely milled and commonly used in baking, icing, and confectionery. It dissolves instantly and provides a smooth texture.

Beet Sugar

Extracted from sugar beet plants, this sugar contributes to nearly 20% of global sugar production. It is widely grown in temperate regions and contains high sucrose levels depending on cultivation conditions.

Indian Sugar Grades

Indian sugar is categorized into L-30, M-30, S-30, L-31, M-31, and S-31 grades based on color and grain size. Among these, 31-grade sugar is considered the highest quality standard defined by the Government of India.
