Fertilizers

Urea (Nitrogen Fertilizer)

Urea is a colorless crystalline compound and one of the most widely used nitrogen fertilizers in the world. With a nitrogen content of 46%, it is a highly concentrated and cost-effective source of nitrogen for agricultural use.

It is easily applied to soil or blended with other fertilizers and is quickly converted into forms that plants can absorb, supporting strong growth and improved crop yield.

In addition to agriculture, urea is widely used in industrial applications such as resins, plastics, and pharmaceuticals, making it a versatile and essential product across multiple sectors.

Product Identification

  • Chemical Name: Urea
  • Formula: (NH₂)₂CO
  • CAS No: 57-13-6
  • Synonym: Carbamide
  • NPK Ratio: 46-0-0

Properties & Safety

Urea melts at 132.7°C and decomposes before boiling, producing toxic vapors when overheated. It is not highly flammable but may react dangerously with strong oxidizing agents.

  • May cause skin and eye irritation
  • High exposure may affect respiratory system
  • Combustion produces CO, CO₂, NOx gases
  • Small fires: dry powder | Large fires: foam or spray

Urea Production Process

1

Ammonia and carbon dioxide are combined under high pressure.

2

Ammonium carbamate is formed as an intermediate product.

3

The compound decomposes into urea and water.

4

Final product is processed into granules or prills.

Types of Urea

  • Granular Urea Stronger, larger particles
  • Prilled Urea Smaller, softer, faster absorption
